| The true strength of the Internet is not in
its ability to deliver infinite amounts of
information to a passive audience; rather, it
lies in its potential to create real communities
where people actively correspond with each other
to achieve a concrete purpose. The On-Line
Partners Program (OLP) represents an effort to
tap into this potential of the Internet by
promoting academic links, expanding educational
resources, and facilitating cooperation between
scholars and students in Central/Eastern Europe
with their counterparts in North America and
Western Europe. OLP is building a global
academic community by facilitating matches
between Eastern and Western scholars and
students, thereby creating a vital, living
network to advance social science scholarship and
cooperation. CEP coordinates the work of
individuals with common interests and
periodically provides partners with useful
updates. By using e-mail and accessing the
Internet, CEP On-Line Partners are able to share
information across social science disciplines,
trade syllabi, offer suggestions on articles and
papers in progress, and direct each other to
useful resources. Through this multiplex exchange
of ideas, advice and information, OLP reduces the
isolation experienced at universities from
Slovakia to Kazakhstan.
